This type of stainless steel is alloyed with titanium 1.4301 and therefore virtually shares the same properties. Titanium is added to ensure resistance, especially against intergranular corrosion in the welded state. Titanium binds the carbon present in the steel to form titanium carbides, preventing the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries during heating. While known for its "welding quality", this type can also be used for extended periods in the temperature range of 450 to 850°C without any issues. Disadvantages of adding titanium include reduced polishability and some decrease in formability compared to type 1.4301. During machining, titanium carbides will cause extra tool wear. The material is widely used in the chemical, textile and rubber industries.
