Within the group of stainless steel grades, 1.4003 contains the lowest percentage of chromium, and other elements which enhance corrosion resistance (such as molybdenum) are also missing. In spite of the reduced resistance to corrosion, this material is used in various areas of application. It can be used as an alternative for engineering steels which are insufficiently corrosion-resistant in applications where thermal, mechanical or chemical effects rule out the use of coatings such as paint and zinc and where the use of 1.4301 stainless steel is too expensive and not required in order to satisfy corrosion requirements. The higher strength relative to the standard grades of stainless steel is a further advantage. As a heat-resistant steel, in furnace and oven manufacture among other applications. In air, the maximum operating temperature is 800 °C. Suitable use as a wear-resistant steel for a number of specific applications where standard engineering steel offers insufficient durability due to the combined effects of rusting and wear.
